CO2 Emissions From Personal and Public Transportation: Ethan Smith

Gas-powered vehicles account for one fifth of the U.S.’s carbon dioxide emissions. With that, these vehicles are emitting 24 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere, per gallon of gas. About 5 pounds comes from the extraction process, and the other 19 pounds come directly from your car’s exhaust. It’s not just personal transportation, however. In total, the U.S. transportation sector accounts for nearly 30 percent of all U.S. global warming emissions. This includes cars, trucks, planes, trains, and ships.  Solutions are being proposed however. One of the main ideas is to incorporate electric vehicles into our day-to-day lives. This would be a viable, long term solution, but people need to make the switch. Within the next decade, the majority of electric cars being produced will be set at a price as that of a normal vehicle, and their will be a much greater amount in use. Another option would be to switch to a cellulosic biofuel, which would cut down CO2 emissions by about 80 percent....
